A conference is most useful when it helps you investigate something specific. Before looking at a programme, write down the research question, product challenge or conversation you want to pursue. The following selection spans six events across Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

November: companies, compute and virtual worlds

Web Summit — Lisbon, Portugal · 9–12 November 2026. A broad technology gathering that brings together founders, companies and investors. Our suggested angle: look at how AI products explain their role in an existing workflow, and ask what happens after the demonstration.

SC26 — Chicago, United States · 15–20 November 2026. The conference focuses on high-performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. Our suggested angle: follow the infrastructure questions behind AI, from moving data to sustaining useful performance.

ACM VRST — Sendai, Japan · 16–18 November 2026. A research symposium on virtual reality software and technology. Our suggested angle: examine interaction, evaluation and the points where immersive systems meet AI. The organiser also lists a pre-conference event on 15 November.

December: the machine learning research frontier

NeurIPS 2026 — Sydney, Australia · 6–12 December 2026. Sydney hosts the main meeting. The official schedule also lists satellite meetings in Atlanta and Paris on 9–13 December. Check where an individual paper or session is being presented before planning a trip.

Our suggested angle: choose a research thread and follow it across papers, discussions and workshops. Compare methods and evaluation conditions before turning a result into a prediction about the whole field.

Looking into 2027

CES 2027 — Las Vegas, United States · 6–9 January 2027. These are the exhibition dates; media events and parts of the conference programme begin earlier. Our suggested angle: look for the relationship between a product’s AI capability, its hardware and the task a person actually wants to complete.

IEEE VR 2027 — Melbourne, Australia · 27 February–3 March 2027. The conference covers virtual reality and 3D user interfaces. Our suggested angle: follow work on presence, comfortable interaction and the evaluation of useful immersive experiences.
