ICML 2025: a better research reading list.

A method for connecting the Vancouver conference’s research with the questions an applied team actually needs to answer.

The conference and the opportunity

ICML 2025 took place at the Vancouver Convention Centre on 13–19 July. Its programme included conference sessions, tutorials, workshops and an expo, as described in the official conference materials.

For a team reading the programme after the event, the challenge is choosing what deserves attention. A long list of interesting papers becomes more useful when each entry has a clear relationship to a question.

Give every paper a job

We would organise a reading list around the decisions a team is considering. One paper might help define an evaluation. Another might introduce an alternative method. A third might expose an assumption in the current approach.

That structure gives a reader a reason to engage with each item. It also makes it easier to notice a gap: if no source addresses an important condition, the team has identified something its own experiment needs to investigate.

Write the note for someone else

A useful research note should be understandable to a colleague who has not read the paper. It can state the question, explain the central contribution and identify the conditions of the evaluation. A link to the original material should remain close to the summary.

We would keep interpretation separate from the reported result. A method that looks promising for a new application still requires a test in that setting. Making that distinction visible helps a team discuss the next step without accidentally turning a possibility into an established fact.

From reading to an experiment

The strongest outcome of a reading exercise may be a smaller, sharper question. What could be tested with the available resources? Which comparison would be informative? What observation would change the team’s decision?

Hypetell sees research gatherings as part of an ongoing conversation. Reading a programme becomes more productive when it is guided by a clear purpose and ends with a concrete experiment.
