SIGGRAPH 2025: creative AI needs creative control.
A question for creative tools at the Vancouver graphics gathering: how does the person remain able to shape the result?
A conversation across disciplines
SIGGRAPH 2025 took place in Vancouver on 10–14 August. Its organisers described AI as a theme across art, research, immersive installations and creative workflows.
That breadth matters because creative work involves more than producing a final image. People develop intentions, compare alternatives, revise details and build a relationship with the tools they use.
A result is not the whole process
Imagine an illustrator exploring several directions for a scene. A generated image may provide an interesting starting point, but the next task could be preserving one detail while changing another. A useful tool needs to support that intention.
We would ask which parts of the work remain easy to select, inspect and revise. If each new attempt disrupts decisions the creator wanted to keep, the tool may make exploration fast while making refinement difficult.
Design for meaningful choices
Creative control can take several forms: a clear history, reversible actions, editable elements or a way to compare alternatives. The right approach depends on the kind of work and the person doing it.
Our proposed evaluation would follow a small creative task through several revisions. Did the tool help the person express a particular idea? Could they understand what changed? Could they keep a promising direction without losing earlier work? Those questions connect a technical capability with the experience of making something deliberately.
The wider Hypetell view
The connection between intelligence and creativity is part of the wider horizon Hypetell follows. We are interested in tools that expand exploration while leaving people room to exercise judgement.
SIGGRAPH’s cross-disciplinary programme is a reminder that a creative system should be understood through the process it supports. The useful contribution may be the next decision it helps a person make.
