ICLR 2025: reading research as a map.
A practical method for navigating the Singapore research programme without losing the question that brought you there.
Singapore, April 2025
ICLR 2025, the International Conference on Learning Representations, took place at Singapore EXPO on 24–28 April. The official schedule separated conference sessions from the following workshop days.
A programme of this kind can be read as a collection of results, but we find another approach useful: treat it as a map of questions. Start with one question and follow the different ways researchers attempt to answer it.
Choose a thread
An applied team might begin with a problem such as adapting a model to a smaller dataset or evaluating whether a learned representation transfers to a new task. A precise question makes it easier to decide which papers deserve close attention.
We would record the task each paper addresses, the assumptions it makes and the conditions under which the proposed method is evaluated. That record creates a basis for comparison even when the papers use different terminology.
Look for the boundaries of a result
Before carrying a result into a product discussion, ask what would have to remain true in the new setting. Does the method assume a particular kind of data? Does the evaluation include conditions resembling the intended application? How much additional work would be needed to investigate the difference?
These questions do not diminish a research contribution. They make it easier to understand where the contribution belongs and what the next experiment should establish. A useful reading note includes the boundary of a claim as well as its central finding.
Bring the map back to the team
Our proposed output from a conference reading exercise is a small, connected set of notes. Each should explain why a result matters to the original question and link to the material supporting it.
For Hypetell, that is one way a research gathering can continue to create value after its dates have passed: it gives a team a clearer map of the work still worth doing.
